Teaching Philosophy & Approach

Nathanael is a passionate and dedicated cello teacher with over five years of teaching experience. He aims to create supportive, engaging, and individually tailored lessons, ensuring that each student’s personal goals remain at the centre of their learning. Whether a student is learning for enjoyment, preparing for examinations, or pursuing advanced study, Nathanael strives to build strong technical foundations alongside confidence and musical expression.

Lessons & Student Development

Nathanael teaches students of all standards, from complete beginners to advanced players. He is experienced in guiding students through all graded examinations and diploma-level study, helping students develop both technically and musically at a pace suited to their individual needs and ambitions.

Professional Teaching Work

Since September 2023, Nathanael has worked as a cello teacher with Sutton Music Trust and, since 2025, with Merton Music Foundation, teaching students from Years 4–13. Through this work, he has gained extensive experience teaching a wide range of ages and abilities in both individual and educational settings. Nathanael is DBS checked and holds public indemnity insurance.

Teaching Experience & Training

During his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Nathanael received pedagogical training from Selma Gokcen. He also undertook further teaching training with Matthew Lowe at the International Cello Gathering, expanding his understanding of instrumental teaching and student development.

Musical Influence & Artistic Background

Having studied with some of the country’s leading pedagogues, including Sue Lowe, Tim Lowe, and Selma Gokcen, Nathanael is passionate about passing on the knowledge and experience he has gained to the next generation of musicians. His teaching is further informed by lessons and masterclasses with distinguished artists including David Takeno, Xenia Jankovic, Louise Hopkins, Adrian Brendel, Jonathan Aasgaard, Leonid Gorokhov, and Andrew Schulman.
